How we use Lo-Dough to make thick and tasty American Style Pancakes

Shrove Tuesday, otherwise known as Pancake Day or ‘Fat Tuesday’ is a traditional feast day that takes place before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent was traditionally a time of fasting in the 40 days running up to Easter. Anglo-Saxon Christians would go into a confession on this day and be absolved of their sins.

Fast forward to the present day and Shrove Tuesday has taken on a completely different meaning. We’ve kept the tradition of eating pancakes and now partake in pancake races across the country. Not many of us go into confession to be absolved of our sins anymore but we did opt in to keep the fun bits: Pancakes and community.

For many of us, the real 21st-century sin is associated with the high carb and calorie content inherent in the humble pancake. Nowadays, most people are no longer feasting in preparation for a fast, there’s no need for us to consume so many calories in one sitting, but we can still join in the fun, after all, who doesn't love a pancake?

Containing no flour or gluten, Lo-Dough makes for the perfect pancake substitute. In fact, many would say that Lo-Dough is better than a traditional pancake due to its uncanny ability to soak up your favourite flavours. This Pancake Day, we got creative in the kitchen in order to put this guide together for you, our favourite customers.

How to use Lo-Dough to make pancakes

  • 1. Lo-Dough will carry all of your favourite flavours

  • We soaked several pieces of Lo-Dough in egg wash, half fat creme fraiche or buttermilk and vanilla extract and a touch of stevia based natural sweetener (if you want sweeter pancakes) overnight and the results were phenomenal. If you can’t bear to wait, then we’d highly recommend soaking Lo-Dough for at least one hour before cooking. You’ll need a couple of eggs and your favourite flavours. Let your imagination run wild. 

    2. Fry in a hot pan for 2-3 minutes on each side

    Once your Lo-Dough has had a sufficient soak, remove from the container and drain off any excess liquid. You can now fry the Lo-Dough in Frylight/Butter/Your fat of choice for 2-3 minutes on each side.

    3. Create your favourite Lo-Dough shape

    Lo-Dough is an incredibly versatile product. You can use it to create a pancake wrap, triangular quarters or circles. Use a round pastry cutter to create small circular shapes, cut into halves or quarters or add your favourite ingredients and wrap it up! The George Foreman/sandwich press works just as well with a Lo-Dough pancake wrap as it does with a toastie. 

    4. Savoury or sweet?  Lo-Dough will make it happen

    Smoked Ham and Gruyere Pancakes with Spinach and Mushroom.


    Cherry and ginger glazed pancakes with delectable (low-fat) cream.

    Any pancake is made possible with Lo-Dough: The only limit is your imagination. Rather than skimp on toppings with a traditional pancake to allow for the carb content, you can now have all of your favourite toppings without restraint because Lo-Dough will take the carb/calorie hit on your behalf!
